Lucky Pierre - 'Hypnogolia' (Melodic)

3/5

By: Matt Tomiak

Lucky Pierre, AKA Aidan Moffat

A swap of name, but not a radical musical shift from day-job band, Arab Strap, Aidan Moffat's largely instrumental debut solo-LP apparently came about as an attempt to combat insomnia. Ironic, then, that playing 'Hypnogogia' from start to finish should result in even the most wakeful of music-lovers sleeping like a baby - in the best possible sense, of course.

After all, just look at the causes of such an ensuing condition: 'Nurse Flamingo' is a twinkling, gentle lullaby; 'Shatterproof' is eight and a half minutes of sombre yet serene brass loveliness; and 'The Bit In The Woods' is essentially a non-commercial re-working of Moby's 'Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?'

Indeed, like Moby's 'Play' album, this is undoubtedly best treated as background music - but not in the pejorative sense (its discerning ambience may occasionally prove testing, but certainly doesn't arrive under the derogatory banner of 'elevator music'). And, in all reassuring probability, not one TV-ad campaign will be used to push this record along its humble-headed way - which makes for an admirable change.
