Travis - 'Flowers In The Window' (Independiente)

4/5

By: Matt Tomiak

Travis - 'Flowers In The Window'It's very difficult to remain cynical about a single as uncynical as 'Flowers in the Window', written and composed by a band so uncynical as Travis. Worries about a slide towards MOR blandness are erased when one is faced with a record as genuinely sweet and affecting as this.

Apparently written as long ago as 1998, even before the recording of the band's breakthrough LP 'The Man Who' was completed (surely one of the greatest albums of the 90s?), with its understated charm, playful banjo and sing-a-long chorus, its closest existing relative is probably prior single 'Driftwood'.

Endearing, gentle, memorable... From such a flourishing display, only the coldest of hearts wouldn't be touched by Fran Healy's almost child-like lack of scepticism.
