Luna - 'Romantica' (Beggars Banquet)

Much like that silly advert is wont to tell TV viewers and DIY enthusiasts the length and breadth of the UK, 'It does exactly what it says on the tin,' Luna's 'Romantica' could be summed up quite simply as 'Twelve slices of understated whimsical charm'.
This, the fifth studio LP from the New York five-piece, although delving into the similar traditional pools as their US alt-rock/lo-fi contemporaries - possessing shades of eels, Mercury Rev and REM - is able to control and possess a genuine warmth and inventive creativity that's so often lacking in such a genre.
Indeed, there are even amusing and quirky lyrical metaphors abound: as an example, from the title-track, you get: 'I'm in a jam/You're in a pickle/We're in a stew'; let alone the unlikely rhyming couplets - 'Renee is Crying' bizarrely pairing 'noodles' with that much underused term, 'oodles'.
Naturally, such idiosyncrasies as those stated merely serve to make the full platter that much more endearing and irresistible.
