Somewhere along the line of former Mod-revivalist Paul Weller's career, he's successfully made the conversion from a rowdy, young upstart into a soulful troubadour. With his latest single, 'It's Written In The Stars', it's clear that he's no longer going underground, so much as trying to tap into the Radio Two database with this offering of lyte, radio-friendly summer-induced pop.
... But you've got to ask yourself the question if this is really as bad as it sounds? You see, he's done the edgy thing with The Jam, the weird, what-the-hell-was-that-all-about phase with The Style Council, and that's not to mention the mountainous fame thing with some of his MOR solo-works... Whatever, Weller remains an institution, a man unafraid to f**k with genres and move on in his own terms. Whereas this doesn't retrace the steps of his classic moments, at least 'It's Written...' possesses enough competence and cute prowess to suggest the old beast ain't beat yet.
