The White Stripes - 'Dead Leaves & The Dirty Ground' (XL)
4/5
By: Toby L

A long-time opener of The White Stripes' live-shows has been this, 'Dead Leaves & The Dirty Ground', in many instances, its huge Rolling Stones/blues guitar-riffs and sleazy melody akin to anything denoted as 'classic-rock' in the last forty years.
Jack White himself is on fine form: the live-esque production and shaky vocals making for a warm, immediate and wholly sweat-inducing listen. With re-recordings of Radio One session-tracks acting as B-sides - the dextrous, wailing solos and Beck-like temperament of 'Suzy Lee' complementing their following, nifty cover of Robert Johnson's 'Stop Breaking Down' - it's an inviting package.
With this most likely proving the last release of The WS' from third-LP 'White Blood Cells', pick this up quick - it'll nicely bridge the gap from here 'til the much-anticipated release of their next full-length.
