The White Stripes - 'I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself' (XL)

4/5

The White Stripes - 'I Just Don't Know What...'

Even in spite of laying claim to the title of this decade's Nirvana, part of The White Stripes' genius lies in part to an ability to interpret and depict that which isn't theirs and then - paradoxically - make it precisely theirs in a moment's heartbeat.

Want proof? Two-thirds of the band's second single from current, classic, LP 'Elephant', isn't even written by them - centrepiece 'I Just Don't Know What To Do Myself' an original Bacharach/David composition - and, if you weren't historically endowed, you'd never even know.

The riveting guitar-playing; Jack's impassioned howl; and Meg's distinctively stodgy rhythm-keeping - adapted to yet another cover-version, and not even a whiff of failure to live up to past standards: timeless, yet, strangely, of an era and time-frame that couldn't be anything other than hopelessly now.
