Michael Andrews & Gary Jules - 'Mad World' (Sanctuary)
4/5
By: Toby L

Christmas 2003, and the UK is deluged once more with a load of shite singles. And at least The Darkness are knowingly 'doing' crap.
Then, running past the Cliff's and Osbournes of this earth... a light, a beacon shines. And, Christ almighty, it features a piano-refrain from an old Tears For Fears song.
Yet, before you repeatedly bash your eardrums to a bleeding pulp at the very prospect, 'Mad World' is actually a timeless, aching and extremely tortured two and a half minutes; a weary ode to the ills of our times, a defying morbidity in the 'season to be jolly'. A single cello, set of keys and bruised vocal (Gary Jules) is all it takes.
Merry Christmas? 'Depressing' Chrimbo, more like - yet at least a more credible one.
