The Martini Henry Rifles - 'And Then We Hit A Truck' (FFVinyl)

3/5

By: Samantha Hall

The Martini Henry Rifles

'You need a fix of something frightening and fast...?' The Martini Henry Rifles ask.

Well, put your head in your Mum's wheelie-bin and get your stoned mate to crash down on it with a club yelling, 'Kazoo Kazaa!!' and that's near enough the same effect you'll get as this band on your hearing-system.

It's fast... and vaguely terrifying; well, in a rough, steal-your-chip-money and spit-on-your-loafers kinda fashion. Then there's punk, similar to that of a lorry speeding towards the horizon whilst beeping its horn... and bleeps reminiscent of a late-70's pinball-machine... and rolling drums like racing, underground pop-punk Japanese outfits... Hmm. A hell of a lot to slash into one damn record, on second thoughts.

Admirable, but not the makings of a hit, clearly. 'Run Jimmy Run, Run, Run You F**ker', the apparent second track on this double A-side, is similarly just as well sampled and rawly produced, but - shocker! - it's pretty much more of the same.

From a wee stunt in New York and their debut album due later this year, it'll be intriguing to see if their 'disgustingly no-fi rock n' roll' lives up to the promise of 2004's impending, 'new' breed of rock.
