Franz Ferdinand - 'Take Me Out' (Domino)
4/5
By: Clara Burtenshaw

To the naked eye, with hair swept Byronically over forehead, dressed immaculately in the past, and with just an unspoken hint of the homosexual, archduke art-school foursome Franz Ferdinand look perfectly harmless.
That is, until needle hits vinyl and the dancefloor becomes a stampede of art and literature students. Their limbs, as if possessed by a burning spirit of European history, begin jerking uncontrollably, pointing and posing to Franz Ferdinand's' flamboyant and fiery rhythm.
Within the first fifty seconds, a guitar riff hurtling at turbo speed paves the path for a voice so latently romantic that every flailing female heart is seduced at once, and a few men's too no doubt. Imagine that Deborah Harry and Julian Casablancas spent a romantic evening together, and in the throes of a passion romp, conceived. Franz Ferdinand would be their exotically named lovechild, and this would be the noise the child makes now. But suddenly, to keep you on your dancing toes the song slows, morphing into a military call for arms that sees FF seemingly battle against The Rapture and Hot Hot Heat for indie-disco supremacy. Who will win? Trendy kids together now - 'Franz Ferdinand bestimmt!'
