Stereophonics - 'Moviestar' (V2)
2/5
By: Kevin Molloy

Sigh. Much like all of the latest 'Phonics 'rock songs', 'Movie Star' proves to be yet another slow-burner in the truest sense of the term. As Jones slurs the refrain, 'Movie Star, don't know where you are,' for the nth time, you sincerely wish that they would just once learn how to end a song with some form of maligned vigour, and not fade into meaningless repetition after nearly five minutes of, well, meaningless repetition.
Yet, not all's irredeemably lost; favourably, traces remain of Jones' knack for a neat turn of phrase (remember 'A Thousand Trees'?). At one point, he drawls that should the eponymous movie star turn 'water into wine', then he'll 'walk on water every night' - but this proves to be the only veritable insight the song bears to offer.
Frustratingly, 'MS' should work its way up the charts easily enough, as Jones well knows. And when he sings that he loves 'the things about you all the critics hate' regarding his movie icon, he knows that the same holds true for himself, the rock star, and his fans. But whilst the airing is solid enough to act as a stepping-stone between albums: much, much more is needed for any impending release.
