The Unisex - 'Pigs & Their Farms'

You've gotta hand it to The Unisex - they've got a way with song-titles. Coming up as the latest in the invasion of bands in the ilk of The Hives or Soundtrack Of Our Lives, these zany, handsome Swedes offer up servings of 'Pigs & Their Farms' along with a side of 'Mushrooms and Broccoli' on a new double A-side single. And while the initial idea sounds particularly appetising... the result lands with a bit of an anti-climatic thud.

'Pigs & Their Farms' starts out like two-day-old leftovers from the Manics' b-side fridge, and trudges along wobblingly throughout. Even pinches of Radiohead-esque, Yorke-y vocal stylings and a reworking by Archive on track-three struggle to inject some sorely needed vibrancy. So on to the next course... A big helping of bouncy, head-bobbing pop on 'Mushrooms and Broccoli', enlaced with that old Britpoppy stomp that probably would have been large and in charge in the mid-nineties - and in comparison to its partner of swine on the flipside, it's an altogether more convincing effort - even if a bit late in the game.

Much like eating at a truck-stop, it's not all entirely atrocious, but you wouldn't want to go out of your way to do it. Sure, there's occasionally little glimmers of hope on the horizon - a 'name your own price' grilled cheese sandwich, a homemade apple pie - but, for the most part, it's sadly just reheated and reconstituted mystery meat.
