The Veils - 'The Wild Son' (Rough Trade)
4/5

The Veils spent a substantial part of 2003 tottering under the weight of their 'big things for 2004' moniker - an unusual title to be bestowed upon this NZ/London 4-piece considering the music world's current love-affair with all things turgid 'n' heavy. Yet the accolades keep rolling in, and with a punk antidote as embodied in their current single, it's easy to see why.
A precursor to their forthcoming, much-anticipated debut album, 'The Runaway Found', 'The Wild Son' features production credits from former Suede guitarist Bernard Butler - and his fingerprints are far from unnoticed; coming on with sweeping strings coupled with a guitar-line that's content to dreamily warble alongside it, the foursome's third 45 has the dark, broad feel of most of Bernie's first solo-effort.
And potential parallels to The Smiths seldom cease; '...& One Of Us Must Go' is impossible to listen to without hearing the hallowed ghosts of Morrissey & Marr echoing through its verses. Wrapped up in a big coat of wry melancholy, it's the stuff that launches those miserable, no-one-understands-me, bedroom floor soliloquy sessions in the diaries of teenage girls; and, as such, is very simply all the more beautiful for it.
It's enough to make even Mozzer smile.
