The Church - 'Song In Space' (Cooking Vinyl)

2/5

The Church

There's a point where 'psychedelic galaxy explorative pop' and 'bangs, crashes and accidents of a band in the full flush of invention' stops being artistically inspiring and turns into simply a loada of crashes, bangs and accidents presented in a drawn out and scraggly manner.

Sadly, The Church's new single 'Song In Space', taken from their seventeenth (yes, seventeenth) album 'Forget Yourself' falls into this category. Apparently, aiming to create a work of a 'live four piece with minimal overdubs' has worked, yet to a flagging standard. Echoing memories of an unrehearsed Kula Shaker, it is epic, with cymbal crashing and stoner's drones a-plenty, but to stand up as a classic, pulsating rock record? Little chance.
