Franc - 'Baby, You're A Rich Girl' (Ultimate Dilemma)

Uncanny. As the first track begins with a mélange of acoustic guitar, harmonica and a spirited drumbeat, it's pondered for a moment whether we're indeed stumbling upon an old Van Morrison retrospective - his famed 'Bright Side of the Road', specifically. But wait. This isn't 1979 - it's 2004. And this isn't Van Morrison - it's Franc.
'Baby You're a Rich Girl' is the name of the subtle copycat in question, the first ever release from this London-based band, a bubbly, just-shy-of-three-minutes piece of folk-influenced pop. Frontman Francesco Cinelli does his best impression of a young - and, naturally, Italian - Bob Dylan, telling the story of a lonely girl with too much cash and not enough friends. Throughout which, Franc throw a handful of genres into the blender, and conjure a musical smoothie enriching to one and all.
Along the same lines, yet a little less inspired, is b-side, 'Smile'; as Cinelli intones, 'This is the best song I ever stole,' you'll want to nod in agreement, and yet, forgive him for the aural appropriation. After all, as he sings elsewhere in the tune, 'It's good to be bad and it's bad to be good sometimes/ Draw the line.' Seemingly, Franc draw the line pretty well.
