Dub Pistols - 'Soul Shaking' (Distinct'ive Breaks)
3/5
By: Kevin Molloy

With its clubland keys building up over the heavy electronic pulses, things could be lining up to be a little too Ibiza. But just as the synthy chords hit what for any other song would be the euphoric high, in kicks the churlishly distorted hip-hop bass, rapped vocals spilling over the mix like a bottle of Smirnoff Ice that your clubbing mate (maturely) has tapped on the neck.
So this should really take you back to those (halcyon?) days of Norman Cook, and the times when DJs played 'Big Beat'. Running through the sections again (you didn't expect progression did you?) we get a cowbell second time through the riff, and - of course - they make anything sound good. That'll do for a new section.
'Cos the point is, this will never be new, nor does it yearn to be. Much as the 'Pistols might want to come across as experimental, they're really refiners. Still, as they say themselves, 'don't fight this natural urge'; we'll see you for a kebab afterwards if we lose you on the 'floor.
