Liars - 'There's Always Room On The Broom' (Mute)
3/5

Rarely, perhaps never before, has a record been blessed (or should that be stricken?) with containing this amount of contradiction. Liars, previously everyone's favourite punk-funkers, are pushing boundaries alright. But how are they doing it? Why, by writing one of their first ever verse-chorus-verse-chorus compositions, of course.
That's right. Two riffs, one of them only two notes in its entirety, if you can call them notes. You see, bearing this in mind, it may be beginning to sound woefully conventional. But realise now, that it sounds like grating your own ears off. It's funny, that's for sure - and a lot about this release is; great title for one, and for artwork, they've decided to just scribble lazily over an Einstürzende Neubauten compilation. But is the joke on us?
Perhaps, yes, as this band used to write brilliantly crafted, innovative rock music you could dance to, and now they come back with a barrage of nigh-on un-listenable noise. But it is a fascinating noise. Bloody hell, confusing. It's not OK. 'There's Always...' is either entirely brilliant or completely awful. Probably, it's both.
