Auf Der Maur - 'Followed The Waves'

Associations and previous performances with two of modern rock's most forthright and relevant heavy-hitters - Hole and Smashing Pumpkins - hasn't deprived Melissa Auf Der Maur with the necessary credentials to form her own gruelling, neo-rock massacre.

And, frightfully, her new combo is rather good. Whereas previous band-mate and outspoken filthster Courtney Love's comeback has been drowned in a glut of 'so what?'s - largely down to lyrical regression and overly glossy production - Melissa's work is assured, vibrant and almost mystically sassy, replete with a sultry vocal-purr, whirling space-age guitars and 'arder-than-gravel rhythm-section. Fans of either of her prior outfits need not prepare for disappointment.
