Keane - 'Somewhere Only We Know' (Universal-Island)
4/5

The resemblances were obvious. Before Keane boded even so much of a minute chance to finish hammering out a bar of 'Somewhere Only We Know' on the ol' grand, the ghosts of Chris Martin swept under the door and through the cracks in the curtain with quivering music-hacks quick to note the results.
But there's a lot more going on here than mere imitation of art. South Coast threesome Tom, Tim and Richard are the conjurors of the third vital song of 2004 (after Franz Ferdinand's 'Take Me Out' and Snow Patrol's 'Run', respectively), whereby sweeping keys and thundering drums are the sole backing to a voice so magnetic and distinct, and a melody so instant and fulfilling that to muster a tear is all but mandatory.
Seemingly, in spite of the potential reference-points, this much so far is clear: Keane are deserving of far more than being lazily compared.
