Death Cab For Cutie - 'The New Year' (Fierce Panda)

4/5

By: Toby L

Death Cab For Cutie

Well, you wouldn't expect a band possessive of a b-side title such as 'Flustered/Hey Tomcat!' to follow mere rules, would you now?

Common listener/purveyor of late-night indie-radio/music-television? Chances are you'll recognise this. If you don't, you'll wish you'll have done so sooner. 'The New Year' shouldn't be so glorious - for one, Death Cab... are from Seattle, traditional home of whinging grungers and rain; secondly, the pace alters and deflects at will without caution, marrying prog-signatures with genial vox and husky guitars; and, yet, it still glimmers with the shine and spark of classic alt-genius.

'So this is the new year... And I don't feel any different.' We didn't either. Until now.
