The Vines - 'Ride' (Heavenly)

4/5

By: Thomas Hannan

The Vines - 'Ride'

Rules are there for a reason. Break them if you want, but beware of the results being decidedly hit and miss. Or, be like The Vines. Perfect the rules and you can't go wrong.

So 'Ride' is a short, sharp, angry pop song with a senseless chorus, is infectious as they come, wonderful for its sheer, stark simplicity and a world away from their reputed, pedestrian 'chilled-out' efforts. It lasts two and a half minutes and sounds like it didn't take much more than that to actually write - and is all the better for it; we like our off-the-cuff Vines.

Does it develop on the template set by 'Highly Evolved', showcase a new side to one of our brightest hopes or knock us off our feet with its unpredictability? Good heavens child, no. It's just The Vines, being The Vines. Luckily though, we love The Vines - especially when they sound precisely like this.
