Gomez - 'Catch Me Up' (Hut)

Are they still around? A band forever synonymous with 1998 and an out-of-the-blue Mercury Prize victory, Gomez are really quite a hardy bunch.
Yet, in keeping with the times, Gomez have gone slightly garage rock on the tinny 'Catch Me Up', also spliced with a few slide guitars. The results are not entirely convincing, and the b-sides provide more reliable fare (including a cover of 20s Delta Blues legend Charley Patton's 'Mississippi Boweevil Blues'). Writing them off this far down the line would mark a foolish move though, as their enduring appeal shows.
