South - 'Colours In Waves'

Blah; North London trio South seldom bring much in the way of bracing genius to the indie melting pot with this, apart from another slice of pop which, though the application of the ubiquitous term ´classic´ inevitably looms, shan't set the music world alight nor break any moulds.

The damage done, 'Colours In Waves' requires the easy listening of the kind provided by bands such as Elbow and Gomez, yet is unfortunately not as stirring or memorable as Doves, Coldplay or newcomers Delays. This is not to say that the song is void of all atmosphere, verve or colour - or that the swirling, cyclic guitars and haunting vocals are not catchy or pleasant; only, that it is uncertain whether South are simply distinctive enough to break free from the myriad of indie-hopefuls mooching about.

Yet, with Manic Street Preachers and Idlewild producer Dave Eringa at the helm and the current chart trend heralding the return of pop-based indie (God bless the Franz, 'Patrol and Keane), it will prove interesting to see whether the good ship South docks safely, or sinks without a trace.
