Powderfinger - 'Love Your Way' (V2)

Powderfinger - 'Love Your Way'

Powderfinger are the modern era's Australian pop-version of 'Zeppelin. Which doesn't leave them very close, but it's a touchstone nonetheless.

Yes, what's missing here is the mess, the exhilaration of Zep. 'Love Your Way' is a strong'un, and, in the hands of others, perhaps the production would be forgivable, but you can just hear the raw Powderfinger lurking in the studio, holding back and not giving it their all. Frustrating would be an understatement.

Their coyly funky reworking of 'Maiden's 'Number of the Beast' as b-side, on the other hand, is hilarious, especially for rock die-hards who will notice a sly Guns 'n' Roses piss-take to boot in the middle section. But this is a band that are simultaneously exorcising their metal ties, and trying to live the rock dream. Big things could happen, but they need to decide to ditch the humour, attractive though it may be, and to let the rock-demons, that are Powderfinger on the stage, loose in the studio.
