Art Brut - 'Formed A Band' (Rough Trade)

5/5

By: Kari Wynn

Art Brut

Taking their name from a phrase coined by French artist Jean Dubuffet comes the painfully hip(-ish) Art Brut and their debut single, 'Formed A Band'. By definition, Art Brut means the art of the outsider - the rebels with a cause, though seemingly without a clue as to how far outside they fall in the social parameters of the universe. It's a fitting moniker, as Art Brut are currently pioneering their own special make of gloriously awkward, punky alt-art-rock.

Allegedly written five minutes after the band first came together, 'Formed A Band' is unapologetically tongue-in-cheek - welding dissonant, punk-fired guitars with hilariously honest lyrics detailing the band's most-definite and imminent rise to fame. It's all the things every newly-formed band waffles on about after their first post-rehearsal pint, but Art Brut turns what usually becomes deeply boring, self-important liability into a cheeky music-industry anthem.

'Look at us! We formed a band!' screeches lead-singer Eddie Argos, as they dream of having their records stacked in the supermarket. B-side 'Bad Weekend' continues along the same vein, culminating with a chorus of 'Popular culture no longer applies to me.' It's brilliantly trashy, and instantly loveable.

Though it still may never be clear as to how Art Brut actually got together to found their grouping, we're all just intensely glad they did. We await further instructions, boys.
