Automato - 'Walk Into The Light' (Labels UK)
4/5
By: Thomas Hannan

It's quite an intriguing exercise in composition, this one. Each instrument taking part in 'Walk Into The Light', if played on its own, would sound an utter mess. Bass guitars join in seemingly only when they can be bothered; to call the rhythm 'structured' would be being very generous; pianos tinkle nonchalantly; and a guitar, at times, sounds as if it's just tuning up. Yes, it sounds brilliant. Honestly.
And though 'Walk...' is so disjointed that it's not unfathomable to think of this as one very lucky mistake on Automato's part, it's no matter, as the effect happens to be one of the best 'nodding' tunes in ages. It might not quite get you throwing shapes around the room, but this luminous, forward-thinking piece of hip-hop craftwork will certainly be more than your head can cope with if you're trying to keep it from moving to the beat. Throw in a chorus so swellingly infectious you'll actually sit down trying to figure out the parts just so you can join in the next time around and what do you have? A very messy, but ultimately classy affair.
