Sophia - 'Oh My Love' (Labels UK)

2/5

By: Tim Dellow

Sophia - 'Oh My Love'

Sophia have always veered towards the twee. On their otherwise superb live album, vocalist/songwriter Robin accidentally hinders an otherwise perfect collection of terse suicide ballads with a dedication to his son on his birthday (complete with an audience 'happy birfday' sing-along) followed by a cover-by-numbers of Lennon's 'Jealous Guy'.

Unfortunately, the scales have tipped from the one cringe-worthy stifle on an otherwise enchanting album to a pack of sleeping-pills, brimming with almost soporific subtlety. The press-release claims that 'Mogwai are huge fans... while Coldplay probably aren't' which seems to suggest some sort of subversive, experimental element to these painful trudges. We can't hear it.

The titles are: 'Oh My Love', 'Genius', 'Someday' and 'I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You' and if that doesn't tell you enough, these are as awkward as your friend's first fumblings with an acoustic guitar around a campfire; you're sitting there looking at him, trying to think of something positive to say before the song ends, evident that he's poured his soul into a song that is as cliché-ridden as pap idol. You try to keep eye-contact and mumble something about a 'nice attempt at classic songwriting', but secretly despair.
