Cathy Davey - 'Come Over' (Regal)

3/5

By: Toby L

Cathy Davey - 'Come Over'The Charlies' 'The Only One I Know' slowed-down and minus the Hammond, Cathy Davey's 'Come Over' slinks and settles in the twee border of the shuffle-indie brigade (similarly purveyed by fellow, Scots-stoner label-mates The Beta Band), before escalating to a series of layered backing-vox and some refreshingly 'live'-sounding percussive punch. Not a bad start.

When slowing for the bluesy slide of 'Hammerhead' (insert your own trouser-region chortles here), or adding drum-machine taps and snaps ('Save Button'), or ambient, self-seeking minimalism - demonstrated stridently in a semi-whispered 'My Surprise' - Davey's game still remains that of understated, whimsical sweetness. Most favourable a charm it amounts to, too.
