Seachange - 'News From Nowhere' (Matador)
4/5
By: Kevin Molloy
A song on the edge of control; that's what this is. 'News From Nowhere's jerking rhythms, destined surely to induce some 'interesting' bodily gesticulations on the indie dance-floors, lock seamlessly with the vocals and guitars - but the parts that the various components are playing are so disparate in pace it leaves you unsure of the stability. The band sways from verse to chorus in the manner of a competent drunk, using his momentum to carry him round the corner, without spilling a drop of his pint. But, here, it's with the kind of introspection even the most assured of piss-heads can't manage.
The narrative is epic in its scope, the lyricism is packed densely throughout, but never overwhelming; you just pick out more and more every time you listen, the song makes more and more sense. That corner the band took at the chorus didn't involve a stagger - it was timed and honed to perfection. And the violins that break from their prescribed parts into a Celtic lilt, and finally starting to wail as the song draws to a conclusion are perfectly choreographed; this is the kind of unity and chaotic calm you get on the precipice of a disjointed mind. It nears the point of introversion and subjectivity that can cause lyricists to spontaneously implode, and it's all the more bloody marvellous for it, too.
