Graham Coxon - 'Bittersweet Bundle Of Misery' (Transcopic)
4/5
By: Thomas Hannan
God bless that Coxon honesty, the all-too-rare sincerity that means sweet little love songs like this one can be pulled off without even a hint of pomposity or bogus sentiment. It's a shy, charming creature, it doesn't even sound particularly confident in telling the object of its affections how 'cool' and 'beautiful' they are, but you can bet it means it, man.
'Sounds like 'Coffee & TV'!' they'll cry. Well, mate - look at who wrote 'em both. Exactly, so shush, will you? It's becoming clear how integral the man in question was to the songwriting process of his former employers, a point that can be stated in one mere fact - Graham only needs an acoustic guitar to write a great song. Com-pu-ters, you say?
Make no mistake; this isn't the sound of a man who isn't trying, just one who seems, finally, at ease. Maybe it's the tune, maybe it's the great little chorus, or perhaps it's just that sheer lack of pretence that makes this such a treat.
