The Vines - 'Winning Days' (EMI)
3/5
By: Lauren Gallagher
Plaintive and wistful, 'Winning Days' will be your summer daydream soundtrack. Taking a contemplative turn on the messy antics of 'Highly Evolved', The Vines combine Beach Boys harmonics with Craig Nicholls' raspy lead vocals; if you wanted more of their 'Get Free' angst, stay clear - nothing to see here.
Soft acoustic chords provide the comforting sound cushion above which Nicholls pines 'the winning days are gone,' as if reaching a pinnacle resonance of nostalgia whilst lying in a field of wildflowers. Before long the drums come driving along, partnered by an electric solo, but it remains warmingly reflective; perhaps Nicholls is reflecting upon his bygone era of falling into the drumkit and only singing song fragments. Maybe the mellow melancholy of 'Winning Days' will keep damage costs down.
