Phantom Planet - 'Big Brat' (Epic)

Fans of 'The OC' beware; if you were hoping for more of the road-trip dreaming of theme song 'California', prepare yourselves: 'Big Brat' sounds nothing like it. Some may lay the blame on Jason Schwartzmann's leaving the band in 2003, but the musician/actor does in fact make an appearance on this 2004 release.
Trashy, sassy synths start the track, prepping for the staccato lyrics and a virile guitar riff to come. Phantom Planet's pretty pop seems to have been replaced with a crunchy sound-bed and an anthemic 'up to no good' chorus, made for late-night dancing under some head-throbbing strobes. Hold on, kids! Da 'Planet drank some Red Bull, so join in the frenzy!
