Rachel Goswell - 'The Sleep Shelter EP' (4AD)
3/5
By: Toby L
With painted flowers adorning the sleeve-artwork and lilting acoustic guitars greeting ears within opening seconds, Rachel Goswell's first EP for 4AD is a scintillating slant of alt.country-pop ravishings, with folksy mini Spanish guitars, strings and Goswell's own harmonic, soothing warble.
This resides on the 'classy' end of the spectrum, then. Opener 'Plucked' is sparse and gently orchestral; 'Sleepless & Tooting' is straw-sucking summer chill-out; 'Flying With Gene' is stark and naked with its sole six-string and occasional bass-fumbles; 'Stickin' With Grace' is chiming Western; and 'Come Rescue Me' is minimalist, simplistic charm (and strangely, easily affecting, in its bare vulnerability - 'Why can't I tell you what's on my mind... Come and rescue me...').
Goswell, we've got your number. We'll be calling again.
