Faithless - 'Mass Destruction' (Cheeky)
3/5
By: Thomas Hannan
We've all enjoyed a bit of Faithless in our time. The dark, pulsing dance music designed to make fists pump into the air with every beat, that warm but slightly sinister vocal-drawl... all have combined to give us some good (inebriated?) times. So on some level, we can all be thankful for the return of what we expect to be some more of the same.
There is, though, a lovely twist in the tale, a refreshingly successful about-turn in the direction of the Faithless thudder. Whilst the copious amounts of remixes included across the formats remain truer to their traditional sound, the original a-side sees the band utilising guitars, brass instruments and creating, all in all, one very funky, uncharacteristically upbeat piece of music.
It's the lyrics that highlight the change most. We could predict that 9/11 would change the world political climate, but for it to provide Faithless with an intriguing, but ultimately entirely justified moral high-ground ('Whether Caucasian or a poor Asian/Racism is a weapon of mass destruction' / 'Whether long range weapon or suicide bomb/A wicked mind is a weapon or mass destruction') didn't ever really seem to be on the cards. But here it is, and it does work. Whilst it's not a flawless exponent, the progressive attitude and sentiment at least cannot be faulted.
