Jetplane Landing - 'Brave Gravity' (Smalltown America)

4/5

By: Thomas Hannan

Jetplane Landing - 'Brave Gravity'It's a song that sounds as if it's falling over, 'Brave Gravity'. Some needless noise spits out a great melody, then a chorus jerks around like someone has just taken the ground from beneath Jetplane Landing's feet mid-tune, only for them to valiantly play on.

Good thing too, as with every unpredictable but perfectly fitting turn the song takes, it gets better. They've a knack for this, they realise that fiddly time-signatures and noisy sections are only truly relevant if you can write a damn good tune to build it around. So this is an intelligent exercise in song-structure, but one you can hum to yourself. How often can you say that?

The momentum's not a steady one but there is always that pace, that urgency that is the most virulent weapon in the Landing arsenal. Heck, they even smatter the b-sides with it too. Every note sounds like it has to be played, and that's why, in short, this should be owned.
