The Veils - 'The Tide That Came & Never Came Back' (Rough Trade)

3/5

By: Samantha Hall

The Vines - 'The Tide...'Finn Andrews has the type of voice that haunts and echoes and tortures your mind for days. A notable voice, a historical voice. One that will stand forth and burn its own candle regardless of what it's accompanying or the context it's absorbed by. It'll rattle your brain and stick in your pulsating blood-stream.

However, 'The Tide That Left And Never Came Back', as deep and profound as it seems, is only a good, rounded indie-pop lovey number. Jolly and perky as those black and white television pigs your Mum used to watch while as a child and no doubt a late-eve Radio 2 smash. And that's all well and good.

But, we think there's much more to The Veils than this. If the emotive power behind that voice leaves anything to honourable musicianship then The Veils have much more to give than what this single offers. More emotion, most vivid lyricism, more aching tunefulness.
