Fights - 'Fights' (Xtra Mile)

2/5

By: Samantha Hall

Fights - 'Fights'Low, sticky-floored working mans' club grumblings with a classic rock vocal overture. Not quite fitting into the 'retro' thing, but at the same time not being original, distinct or razor-edged enough to hack out their own catchment circle/audience.

With seemingly good intentions of portraying the disillusioned, economic northern struggle, in reality, Fights' focal subject-matter just seems bit old hat, rather used news; although, indeed, the negative and shattering economic effect of Thatcherism can still be felt in South Yorkshire today, this political bomb was in fact over two decades ago now. People use Thatcherism as a reference-point, as an iconic comparison to current political-social turmoil - it is, in truth, the past. Why not move on and live in the present - Fights' don't even seem to recall it with nostalgia or bitter acceptance, but merely recall it as if it were a hot, present-day issue. Nice guitars, though.
