Polly Paulusma - 'Give It Back' (One Little Indian)

4/5

By: Samantha Hall

Polly Paulusma - 'Give It Back'Seemingly a strange choice of single compared to her two other gentler, more soothing flipsides. However, 'Give It Back' is an upbeat, feisty demonstration of Paulusma's unique, uncategorisable and, indeed, sultry voice.

Acoustic, female vocalist, yes. But this is by no means is a run-of-the-mill Morissette try-hard; there's too many sounds, too many avenues wandered down for pretty Polly to be filed into that genre. Her ambience, her sound is more soulful than indie; too bluesy and urban to be pop. 'Leave Your Keys' is one of the most poetic yet understatedly true-to-life portrayals of saying goodbye to someone that's broken your heart, yet you don't want to leave behind, without the schmaltz. Like an empathetic friend, she coos her understanding of emotional and entangled relationship games; of winning when it feels like you've lost, and of all the fuzz between the ears and tears that spring from it.
