Marjorie Fair - 'Stare EP' (EMI)
2/5
By: Kari Wynn
Gosh golly, gee-whiz - and here we were just thinking that the world desperately needed a band that sounds like the bruised morning after of Chris Martin and Kelly Jones hammering away at one another while dreamily hopped up on goofballs the night before. Coming at 'cha from the heady California sunshine is Marjorie Fair and their single, 'Stare': an LA band who would probably have you believe that they were earnestly meditating upon the spectres of West Coast pop but unfortunately lack the aptitude (or perhaps maybe the balls?) to back it up.
Sure, their harmonies are lazily hazy, vocals are 'winsome' enough and 'Stare' as a tune is a serviceable, albeit a frustrating and aimlessly wandering, little ditty. Yet, building up to little and then back again, this debut lacks that crucial hook so desperately required when attempting jangle of such variety.
Back to the pop incense and musical mediation mats with ye, Marjorie Fair; thou can do better: we know it.
