The Von Bondies - 'Tell Me What You See' (Sire)

3/5

By: Austin Louis Ray

The Von Bondies - 'Tell Me What You See'Even the least cynical gormandizers of music are still sometimes prone to the scepticism that comes with a relatively small band making the jump to a major-label. In exhibit A, we have Detroit garage denizens, The Von Bondies, going to bat for Warner imprint Sire Records on their second proper long-player, 'Pawn Shoppe Heart'. Gone is the mom and pop label Sympathy for the Record Industry, and likewise, gone is the band's rougher sound, traded in for a more polished (read: watered down) output.

Or is it?

From the sound of 'Pawn Shoppe's second single, 'Tell Me What You See', not really. The song is two minutes and 15 seconds of what we've come to expect from the Bondies; Stollsteimer still yelps like mad, the guitars still spew forth scrappy, garage-harking hooks, and there's still that general feeling that the song could fall apart at any moment. And yes, it might be a little buffed around the edges, but for now, it doesn't seem like the majors have done much to hurt this band.
