The Distillers - 'Beat Your Heart Out' (Hellcat / Sire)
3/5

Now Courtney Love has taken to salvaging her solo-career by starring in a comic-book series in Japan, accepting defeat, perhaps it's only fair the ascendance of her successor - one Brody Dalle of The Distillers - proceeds in such fine form?
Whatever your slant on the band's 'rock 'n' roll' credos (personally, we think there's very little of it; we've seen the shouty-woman-fronting-punk-band thang so many times now), they do pen some infectious later-eve radio-clobber. 'Beat Your Heart Out' is the latest from their 'Coral Fang' album, and is produced by Pixies honcho Gil Norton. It rollicks along in that distinct, Rancid-esque bass-heavy rumble, while Dalle's brutal, raspy affirmations certainly ain't that much of a sore; and the anthemic chorus is pretty melting, too. Sometimes, two minutes, fifty-nine is all you need.
