Gisli - 'How About That?' (EMI)
1/5

American geek-rock... from Iceland. Yes, native Icelandic singer Gisli (not to be confused with appalling J-Lo and Ben Affleck cinema) sounds about as Icelandic as momma's hot apple pie in this lo-fi, pared-down tribute to Weezer and Jimmy Eat World, but lacking both their charisma, humour or sincerity.
Starting with only voice and an acoustic guitar, it's not long before synth and drums kick in alongside a sugar-sweet sing-along chorus that barely manages to contains its own bile - so no petulant teenage post-adolescent resentment here. How about that? Takes a Homer Simpson view of the world when it states that 'A lot of overweight bankers used to be studs... A lot of stockbrokers used to be broke.' EMI, meanwhile, take this as 'razor-sharp insights delivered with a generous dose of irony.' D'oh.
