Glass - 'Glass' (Soviet Union)
2/5
By: Clara Burtenshaw
This eponymous E.P would have been pivotal had it been released ten years ago. Opened by a virtuoso explosion of energy in the form of track 'Gun In A Paper Bag', the steely, slow-building combination of guitar and a distinctly unnerving drum-pattern immediately engages the listener, and would have launched Glass into the upper echelons of the top-twenty at the height of the post-grunge indie period.
'Doves' recalls the Foo Fighters circa debut 'This Is A Call' and, instrumentally, Pearl Jam, while the guitars and chord progressions are notably remnants from 'The Bends'. Third track, 'Engineering Opinion' also takes inspiration from the 'head with a particularly strong vocal resemblance between singer Paul Baird and Yorke himself; yet the question begging to be asked is whether Glass, a band clearly showing promise in abundance, have missed the boat. The answer to this is unfortunately anything but crystal clear.
