J-Kwon - 'Tipsy' (BMG)

3/5

By: Kevin Molloy

J-KwonJ-Kwon is self-confessedly trying to 'introduce hood to pop... and pop to hood'.

Right then.

'Tipsy' could well be a perfect example of such an effort, we presume. This is hip-hop lite: we have the good old tricks of counting up and down, and cycling through the letters of the alphabet ('A to the B to the C...'). This 'Sesame Street' approach is adopted despite the fact that the young (a mere 17 years of age) J-Kwon claims he 'rhymes hardcore'. (By the way - 'hardcore' actually rhymes with the aforementioned number '4' - Irony Ed.)

And yet all of this works. As an MC, master Kwon has an admirable range of expression, and choruses this catchy should prove to be a mark of his durability when combined with such unabashed, evident skill. It could be the sheer joyous grindability of the riff, or the cheekily endearing tones of the teen-hopster encouraging drunken revelry, but either way this track's humour, and obsession with alcohol, bode well for success this side of the Atlantic. Because, let's face it, we're a nation of piss-heads that enjoy a laugh, and wouldn't a dance be nice at the same time?
