The Open - 'Just Want To Live' (Loog)
4/5

'My life's at the bottom/I'm trapped in the bottle again'. Heavy, maaan.
Music's most documented subject-matter - emptiness, longing - only works if revitalised, given a new aural backdrop and spin to make it all the more noteworthy, or - simply - interesting. The consequence of failing? The worst thing imaginable: being mediocre.
So The Open acknowledge this by producing a compelling, third single - a Doves-cum-Mercury Rev throbber of an indie power-ballad which runs in the vein of a self-help anthem; 'Just Want To Live' equates to all those over-used, clichιd journalistic terms that we'll repeat for convenience - soaring, swooping, grandiose, epic. Led by teeming guitars and misty-eyed vocals, it's a mini-masterpiece.
