Morrissey - 'First Of The Gang To Die' (Attack)
4/5
By: Matt Tomiak
My gosh, pop? It's hard to recall a moment in Mozzer's career either with The Smiths or his solo work that is so instant, stirring, polished and radio-friendly. But that's just the tune, the lyrics, telling as they do of a ruthless Mexican bandit, are classic Steven Patrick Morrissey.
Quality b-sides too; 'Teenage Dad On His Estate' is a gloriously caustic critique of
the bourgeoisie ('With his baby and his modest home/He's happy to leave him alone') and a stinging anti-American tirade, 'Mexico.' Both are reminiscent of the scathing, bitter and darkly witty verbal assaults of yore, such as 'The Headmaster Ritual'. Yet more marvellous reform.
