Ryan Adams - 'Wonderwall' (Lost Highway)
2/5

Perhaps the whole thing wouldn't seem so ingratiating if we'd witnessed 'Wonderwall' performed so earnestly by Ryan Adams in advance of receiving the review-copy; after all, his live-rendition of the track has been perceived by many-a-critic as the quintessential, heart-rending version of the Oasis modern standard.
But the reality is, we haven't seen his version live. So will judge it merely on its recorded version. Adams has ballsed-up.
For this is the sort of innocuous, tokenistic cover that puts artists backward five paces after their taking two forward - a solo-artist of such calibre, such erstwhile and continuing word-of-mouth perpetuating success and credos does not need to release an 'emotional', reverby-laden guitar/cello rendition of a Noel Gallagher song, complete with vocal-crack mid-song to show added authenticity. Coupled with the fact that Oasis had already executed a masterfully landmark, ubiquitous version of the tune in the first place, Adams' 'Wonderwall' really does seem a dismal, flat alternative.
