Dogs Die In Hot Cars - 'I Love You Cause I Have To' (V2)
4/5

In all two minutes and forty-eight seconds of this, the word 'love' is used at least thirty-three times. Trust us, we counted (yeah, it was a slow night). Other drippy notions such as 'compassion' made a couple of notable appearances to boot. Which means it should be about as soppy as a children's choir on a charity record. It's not.
It doesn't seem as if the love in question is of the unrequited or written in the stars variety, rather it's one that has become such a habit that it'd be more effort to stop than it is to just carry on towards a dead end. Deep... but hang on, it's a bloody pop song! Here at least, somewhere between the swagger of The Libertines and the classic melodic sensibilities of Madness (of all people) lie Dogs Die In Hot Cars, and a properly heated, somewhat subversive pop record - and a pretty glorious one at that. And like all great pop records, it'll refuse to let go of your consciousness without a fight. This one however does have that welcome little portion of depth to bolster the inane catchiness that bit further.
'I Love You 'Cause I Have To', then - the perfect soundtrack to the inside of your head for weeks to come; just perhaps not a title to quote in a card to a beloved come next February 14th.
