The Fiery Furnaces - 'Single Again' (Rough Trade)

3/5

By: Lauren Gallagher

The Fiery Furnaces - 'Single Again'Men seem to leave a bad taste in Eleanor Friedberger's mouth. A possessed keyboard opens 'Single Again', as if its gothic tones were the soundtrack to a Beetlejuice video game, before the dame of sibling duo Furnaces confesses 'He beat me, he banged me, he swore he would hang me.' No wonder she wishes she was single again - the spasmodic, twitching keys are proof enough of the schizophrenia which inevitably resulted due to the trauma.

'Evergreen' is a more plaintive-almost domestic affair, with the sound of a piano plodding along loyally, while Eleanor discusses beekeeping. Yes. Beekeeping. An electric guitar then rears its brazen head before disappearing and metamorphosing into an acoustic outro. It is simple enough - although not simple enough to evoke any awe. Eleanor boasts a compelling voice, rich with pouting angst that should be put to better use. Yes, The Fiery Furnaces, confusingly, are never one thing or the other. Just something bafflingly, always in between.
