The Beta Band - 'Out-Side' (Parlophone)
4/5
By: Toby L
The last time we heard dog-barking this compressed and shamelessly sampled on an indie-record, it marked the end of Elastica's career (completist-check - examine their penultimate single, 'Mad Dog', released in 2000 through the sadly, equally defunct Deceptive Records, to hear such rabid rumbles). But you can anticipate that The Beta Band will fare somewhat better.
'If I had a pot to piss in/I'd take it out-side,' croons Steve Mason. 'I should bloody well hope so,' retorts his mother (probably) when hearing this sprightly, summery blast of shuffle-pop, with weird synthy action to boot. And if Gomez hadn't taken too many hallucinogenics, perhaps they would have got to this thrilling, percussive cacophony first. The fact anyone did, however, is cause for celebration in itself.
