Clor - 'Welcome Music Lovers' (Regal)

2/5

By: Thomas Hannan

Clor - 'Welcome Msic Lovers'Presumably like the rest of the world, we don't know much about who or what Clor is. The accompanying press release for the 'Welcome Music Lovers' EP has little by way of information, only a crude scribble of a claw and a phone number we were too frightened to call. Their website is pretty, but ultimately useless. Seems they're ones for letting the music do the talking.

This is dance music in the traditional sense that you can shake to it if you so desire, not that it's full of intellectual noise collages and intricate rhythm structures. With 'Magic Touch', it gets down and dirty with some Scissor Sisters camp pop, on 'Good Stuff' they epitomise their game with some brash bass and programmed beats not unlike (but hardly superior to) Le Tigre. 'Making You All Mine' jitters around uncomfortably, whilst on 'Gifted' they attempt a sentimental acoustic campfire sing along but sadly forget to bring anything more than a mediocre tune.

And then, it just ends, and nobody's left any the wiser. What just happened? It seems that despite the initial mystery, all we've got is a disjointed collection of songs, not dire, not inspired, but for a record this odd, bafflingly tedious. It's fine to let the music do the talking when there's something to say, but quite what the purpose of this is remains tellingly unclear throughout.
